Trends in safety footwear

Advancements in technology and design are transforming safety footwear. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provides guidance on foot protection, along with corresponding American National Standard Institute (ANSI) standards. Employers must make sure employees use protective footwear when working in areas where there is a risk of foot injuries. These new work boot trends improve PPE safety, comfort, function, and durability.

1 Increased use of lightweight materials.

One of the key trends in safety footwear is the use of long-lasting, lightweight materials. Traditional work boots are heavy, causing strain and fatigue. However, the use of carbon fiber, thermoplastics, and composites allows manufacturers to create lightweight boots that offer protection while reducing the weight on the wearer.

2 Improved comfort and athletic styling.

Athletic styling inspired by sports footwear is gaining popularity, particularly among millennials, who represent the largest working population in the U.S. Manufacturers are producing safety footwear with stronger meshes, anti-fatigue footbeds, moisture-wicking linings, shock absorption, and flexible soles. These features enable more natural foot movement and enhance comfort.

3 Focus on fit for women.

According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, the number of women in the trades increased 32% from 2017-2021. With this increase, manufacturers are tailoring safety footwear for both genders in a wider range of sizes. This ensures that women can access comfortable and protective PPE.

4 Smart and connected work boots.

A new design trend is safety footwear that includes smart technology. Companies are adding sensors and smart features to track user health metrics, such as footsteps and geolocation, as well as monitor risks like toxic gases and radiation. These smart work boots can connect to mobile apps via Bluetooth, enabling data analytics and reporting. They can even detect falls, provide advanced remote safety monitoring, and track incidents in workplaces.

5 Sustainable manufacturing and supply chain.

Work boot brands are embracing sustainability across their operations. Many brands prioritize eco-friendly practices, including the use of recycled and low-impact materials in manufacturing, creating sustainable supply chains, and implementing ethical labor practices. For example, some brands use recycled PET from plastic bottles to create comfortable insoles.
