Candles fill our homes with scents and light, but they’re also one of the leading causes of residential fires. Practicing candle safety is key to protecting your home and family.
Prepare candles
- Trim wicks to a half inch. This prevents high flames which can cause a fire.
- Make sure your candle holder is sturdy and doesn’t tip over easily.
- Buy candles that have fire safety labeling and follow fire safety standards.
Choose the safest place for candles
- Place candles on a sturdy, heat resistant surface that prevents them from being knocked over.
- Keep candles away from open windows, fans, vents, and drafts.
- Burn candles in a well-ventilated room.
Burn candles safely
- Don’t leave a burning candle unattended.
- Keep multiple candles at least 3 inches apart.
- Never put a lit candle within 12 inches of something flammable.
- Keep candles out of reach from children and pets. Create a three-foot safety zone.
- Don’t move a candle while it’s lit.
Extinguish a candle safely
- Don’t let candles burn all the way down. Put them out when a half inch of wax remains.
- Use a candle snuffer or gently blow out the flame.
- Don’t splash the flame with water. It can cause the candle to fall over or splatter hot wax.
- Don’t move the candle until the wax has cooled and hardened.
Safe alternatives to traditional candles
- Battery operated candles are the safest option.
- An electric candle warmer is a great way to enjoy scented candles without an open flame.
