Become a Texas workers’ compensation treating doctor checklist

Become a certifying doctor

All health care practitioners who participate in the Texas workers' compensation system must:

  • have an active license to practice in their jurisdiction;
  • not have any disciplinary orders restricting them from participating in the Texas workers’ compensation system;
  • disclose financial interests to DWC through your TXCOMP profile (see the fast facts);
  • create a health care provider profile by going to TXCOMP and selecting 'Online Access Request' from the main menu; and
  • contact the certified workers’ compensation health care network directly for the network’s credentialing process if providing services to injured employees who have network claims. See network Information for Providers and Find a certified WCNet.

When is training required?

  • Treating, referral and consulting doctors are not required to complete training or testing.
  • Certifying doctors who conduct maximum medical improvement and impairment rating examinations must complete the DWC required training, testing and notification to DWC by emailing OMA@tdi.texas.gov.
  • Designated doctors are required to complete the DWC required training, testing and apply to be included on the DWC list of designated doctors.


Definitions

health care provider is a health care facility or a health care practitioner.

health care facility is a hospital, emergency clinic, outpatient clinic, or other facility, that is appropriately licensed to provide inpatient and outpatient medical services to patients experiencing acute illness or trauma.

health care practitioner is an individual who is licensed to provide health care, or an unlicensed individual who provides health care under the direction or supervision of a doctor.
