Help after the storm

tdi-in-houston.jpgVisit our Help after the storm page for information to help you recover and rebuild. Topics include:

  • Filing a claim and what to expect
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Options if your insurance isn’t paying enough or denies a claim
  • When repairs need a windstorm inspection
  • How to avoid contractor scams

Our role during a disaster: how we help

We send investigators to areas hard-hit by storms to help deter fraud, which can range from shoddy repairs to price gouging. In the worst cases, contractors may simply take your money and run.

We also help make sure Texans get fast and fair service from their insurance companies. During a disaster, this includes helping storm victims by:

  • Finding contact information for their insurance companies.
  • Answering questions about insurance.
  • Explaining the insurance claims process.
  • Resolving problems or complaints about an insurance company, agent, or adjuster.

Texas Windstorm Insurance Association

TWIAThe Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) offers insurance policies to those who are unable to get insurance through regular insurance companies. Learn more about Windstorm insurance in Texas.

TWIA offers coverage for wind and hail damage in certain Texas coastal areas.

To buy a TWIA policy, most homes and properties must have a certificate showing that it can withstand high winds and hail. Learn more and get resources in our tip sheets, “What is windstorm insurance” and “What you need to know about windstorm inspections.”
