FAIR selected as arbitration benchmarking database
Senate Bill 1264, the state’s transformative legislation to protect consumers from surprise medical bills, directs the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) to select a benchmarking database for use in arbitration cases. FAIR Health was the only organization that responded to TDI’s search survey that met all the legislation’s requirements.

State files lawsuit against Aliera Healthcare
The State of Texas has filed a lawsuit seeking to stop Aliera Healthcare from selling health insurance in Texas and engaging in the business of insurance without a state license. The lawsuit also seeks civil penalties. After filing the lawsuit June 13 in the 53rd Civil District Court in Travis County (Cause Number D-1-GN-19-003388), TDI dismissed the administrative action pending with the State Office of Administrative Hearings.

DWC Gets Indictments in Two Separate Workers’ Comp Fraud Cases
On April 8, Travis County grand juries returned indictments against two Texas companies involved in alleged premium fraud. Amer Haurani of Ambassador Limousine and Charter service out of Houston is charged with a first-degree felony for allegedly under reporting payroll for limousine drivers to get a lower insurance rate. Kevin Ortiz of Ortiz Drywall in Lockhart was also indicted April 8 on a state jail felony for premium fraud.

A Plano woman pleaded guilty to insurance fraud for faking cancer claims to get more than $300,000 in insurance payments over two years.

Houston Company to Pay a Quarter Million Dollars to Settle Workers’ Comp Fraud Case
A Houston company pleaded guilty today to workers’ compensation premium fraud in a case that spanned four years. Alpha Mar, which makes custom parts for various industries, entered the plea in a Travis County District Court. The company was ordered to pay $250,000 to Texas Mutual Insurance Company, the workers’ compensation carrier.
