Windstorm Insurance Inspections

(February 2018)

Coastal county residents

If you plan on getting windstorm and hail insurance through the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA), you must let TDI know this before beginning any construction.

Coastal counties affected:

  • Aransas
  • Brazoria
  • Calhoun
  • Cameron
  • Chambers
  • Galveston
  • Jefferson
  • Kenedy
  • Kleberg
  • Matagorda
  • Nueces
  • Refugio
  • San Patricio
  • Willacy

Harris County areas affected (east of Highway 146):

  • La Porte
  • Morgan’s Point
  • Pasadena
  • Seabrook
  • Shore Acres

To get or keep TWIA windstorm and hail insurance, certain projects in these areas typically must have: (1) an inspection, and (2) a Certificate of Compliance (Form WPI-8 or WPI-8-C). These projects include:

  • New structures
  • Re-roofs
  • Additions
  • Repairs
  • Alterations
  • A/C mechanical

Inspections for a WPI-8 certificate issued by the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI): Must be conducted during construction by a TDI-employed inspector or an engineer appointed by the commissioner of insurance. TDI-employed inspectors can inspect certain alterations, roofs, and repairs at no charge. To request an inspection, contact the Windstorm Inspection Program field office near you before construction begins.

Inspections for a WPI-8-C certificate issued by TWIA: Must be completed by a licensed professional engineer and can be conducted after construction is done.
