Workers’ comp training offered to San Antonio medical office staff
The Division of Workers’ Compensation and the University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA) Small Business Development Center will offer training for medical office staff at the UTSA Downtown Campus, 501 W. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd., on Thursday, October 5. The seminar runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is $40.00 in advance, and $60.00 at the door. The fee includes continental breakfast, lunch and parking.

DWC names Timothy P. Riley Deputy Commissioner of Compliance and Investigations
The Division of Workers’ Compensation today announced the hiring of Timothy P. Riley as the Division’s new Deputy Commissioner of Compliance and Investigations. Riley most recently served as vice president of Special Investigations for Texas Mutual Insurance Company, the state’s largest provider of workers’ compensation insurance coverage.

The Division of Workers’ Compensation and the University of Houston Small Business Development Center will offer training for medical office staff at the UH SBDC, Suite 200, 2302 Fannin in Houston. The seminar will be Tuesday, September 19, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is $99, including lunch and parking.

DWC rule addresses compounded drugs
When a Texas House committee asked the Division of Workers’ Compensation to look at compounded drug prescriptions for injured employees, the division turned to its data on pharmacy billing and an ongoing audit of doctors’ practices for answers. It found that the cost of compounded drugs doubled from 2010-2014, and the average cost per prescription had risen to $829 in 2016.

Injured employees have ready access to medical care, study shows
Injured workers in Texas have better access to physicians who can treat them more quickly than they did 15 years ago, according to a September 2016 study by the Texas Department of Insurance’s Research and Evaluation Group (REG). The study found 84 percent of injured workers received initial care in seven days or less in 2015, compared to 76 percent in 2000.

Workers’ Compensation Weekly Benefit Rates Set for October 1, 2016, Through September 30, 2017
The workers’ compensation state average weekly wage for dates of injury from October 1, 2016, through September 30, 2017, is set at $912.69. The maximum weekly benefit rates for workers’ compensation income benefits is set at $913 and the minimum weekly benefit rate is set at $137 for that period.

Division of Workers’ Compensation Releases an Educational Video for the Transition to ICD-10 Code Sets
AUSTIN, TX — The Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) reminds all Texas workers’ compensation system participants that beginning October 1, 2015, the system will follow federal regulations and transition to the use of the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition, Clinical Modification and Procedure Coding System, (ICD-10). The DWC has created a new training video on the transition from current ICD-9 to ICD-10 code sets available to system participants.

AUSTIN, TX — Texas Governor Greg Abbott has proclaimed May as Texas Occupational Safety and Health Month. Division of Workers’ Compensation Recovers More than $500,000 Owed to Injured Employees and Beneficiaries
AUSTIN, TX –The Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) conducted performance audits of several insurance carriers on the accuracy of payments of Lifetime Income Benefits (LIBs) and Death Benefits (DBs). Through these audits, DWC discovered underpayments on 64 claims totaling over $511,000.

DWC Offers New Educational Outreach Program for Injured Employees
AUSTIN, TX — The Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) has recently launched a new educational outreach program, Workers’ Compensation Fundamentals, designed to educate injured employees about the basics of workers’ compensation, so they are able to successfully navigate their claims. The free sessions are offered in both English and Spanish in select cities, and developed to ensure the information is provided clearly to the participating injured employees.

Commissioner Brannan Lowers Maintenance Tax Rate to Start 2015
AUSTIN, TX — Texas Workers’ Compensation Commissioner Ryan Brannan has determined, pursuant to Texas Labor Code Section 403.003, that the maintenance tax rate be lowered to 1.533 percent of gross premiums collected by workers’ compensation insurance carriers from January 1, 2014, through December 31, 2014.
