The Financial Examiner Trainee performs tasks to determine and report in writing on the financial condition of and regulatory compliance by insurance companies.

This position:

  • prepares work sheets and tabulations of financial data from company records and representations of management;
  • compares company records and work papers to annual and other financial statements, detecting and recording any variances;
  • tests investments to standards references and calculates investment income;
  • evaluates recorded assets, liabilities, surplus and capital for compliance with statutes, rules, and regulations;
  • prepares correspondence to verify company accounts and reconciling replies to company records; and
  • assists with special projects.


Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in business administration, finance, accounting, economics, insurance, or in a related field.  

For degrees other than Accounting, it is required that all of the following courses below have been completed successfully:

  • Accounting Fundamentals (6 semester hours)
  • Finance or Economics (3 semester hours)
  • General Auditing (3 semester hours)
  • Business Law (3 semester hours)


Master of science (MS), or M.B.A. in accounting from an accredited college or university.


Must attain qualification as an Accredited Financial Examiner (AFE) within a period not longer than three years after employment as a trainee, and qualification as a Certified Financial Examiner (CFE) within a period not longer than five years after employment as a trainee.

NOTE: In order to attain the Certified Financial Examiner (CFE), a total of three semester hours of a Management course from an accredited college or university is required.  Management courses offered by CPCU, LOMA and CLU will satisfy this requirement

This position requires demonstrated knowledge of:

  • basic financial accounting practices and procedures, general business concepts, and a general understanding of business law and practices; and
  • Microsoft Office software applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook.

This position requires demonstrated skill in:

  • using Microsoft Office software applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook;
  • problem solving, decision making and planning;
  • professional verbal and written communication skills;
  • gathering and assimilating information from multiple sources efficiently, and developing clear and concise conclusions;
  • strong organizational skills; and
  • operating a motor vehicle in a safe courteous manner in compliance with traffic laws.

This position requires the demonstrated ability to:

  • apply critical thinking to analyze and solve work problems;
  • effectively and efficiently learn to audit financial statements, reports, records and forms;
  • apply statutory accounting practices and analytical skills;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, team members, coworkers, and the public;
  • take initiative, accept new challenges, and be adaptive to changes; and
  • satisfy the conditions required to maintain fully-qualified driving status.
