Internal/External Posting – TDI Employees and General Public

The Unix Administrator analyzes, designs, and implements server application installations for AIX, Unix and Redhat Linux. Work involves providing advance problem resolution to Unix and Linux issues and cross training other technicians on problem resolution.

This position:

  • oversees projects that require coordinating, planning, and scheduling during project development and implementation stages;
  • oversees the training of staff prior to the implementation of technical systems and offers advice and guidance during the implementation process;
  • creates, analyzes and modifies procedures for efficiency and effectiveness;
  • analyzes and assists in defining agency disaster recovery procedures;
  • develops, performs, and sets objectives for policies and procedures ensuring the security and integrity of the local area network or wide area network environment;
  • determines operational, technical, and support requirements for the location, installation, operation, and maintenance of data processing, data communications, desktop processing, and other office equipment and systems;
  • administrates user IDs, rights and privileges on security devices, applications, desktops and servers within the LAN and WAN based network environment; and
  • performs other duties as assigned.


Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university. Education and experience relevant to position may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis. 

Additionally, this position requires:

  • three years’ experience in systems analysis, design, and/or administration work.

Preferences for this position include:

  • one year of most recent experience in an administration role within a Unix or Linux environment; and
  • ITIL Foundation certification.

This position requires demonstrated knowledge of:

  • AIX, Unix and Redhat Linux;
  • installation/patching of Unix and Linux operating systems;
  • software installation in a Unix and Linux environment;
  • system backups - data recovery;
  • scripting languages such as Perl, Python, Bash, and Korn shell;
  • Linux Kernel and kernel modules;
  • working exposure to networked storage (SAN,NAS) concepts;
  • IT Security best practices;
  • open source tools, monitoring systems;
  • the limitations and capabilities of computer systems;
  • computer hardware and software; and
  • routers and data communication methods.

This position requires demonstrated skill in:

  • problem solving, decision making and planning;
  • effectively communicating both verbally and in writing;
  • coordinating and solving problems, and in troubleshooting computer systems; and
  • the use of personal computers sufficient to enter and extract data from related systems and programs such as Oracle and Access.

This position requires the demonstrated ability to:

  • train staff in the use and maintenance of complex systems in a clear and concise manner;
  • understand and follow complex instructions;
  • communicate professionally and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with all levels of employees and the public;
  • bend, stoop and safely lift items weighing up to fifty pounds;
  • apply critical thinking to analyze systems and procedures; and
  • write and revise standards and procedures.
