The Research & Analysis Specialist participates in the processes associated with the Annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII). Work involves collecting, compiling and analyzing research data. The Research & Analysis Specialist also enjoys a rewarding career by participating in the production of the SOII data which are used by safety and health policy analysts and researchers to help prevent nonfatal work injuries. The Research & Analysis Specialist will receive ongoing professional development and training, work regular hours with the option for flexible schedules, and hone their occupational safety and health research skills by working with different sources and agencies throughout Texas and the U.S.

This position:

  • performs data collection, assignment of numeric codes to data, and refinement of employer information;
  • performs review, research, calculations, updates and corrections of estimates reports generated by BLS National and Regional Offices to identify and resolve data issues; analyzes industry/workforce estimates; and evaluates potential data publishability, throughout the data collection, based on statistical methods;
  • provides support for the Safety Violations Hotline by performing data entry, batching Hotline reports to inspectors and tracking case status, and preparing related documentation, forms, reports, and correspondence in accordance with program policies and procedures.
  • prepares routine and non-routine reports, charts and graphs for presentations; assists with preparation of data tables for reports, press releases, correspondence, forms, documents and publications;
  • develops special data analyses and summaries, for the BLS programs and Workplace Safety, to be used in publications or studies; produces detailed reports, charts, and graphs; answers requests from internal and external customers for data gathered through research and analysis programs; plans and implements assigned projects from the beginning to end; and takes initiative and tracks trends to suggest research activities;
  • performs check in and workload batching, logging and monitoring; communicates program issues to regional staff and tracks program progress; handles IT related issues; maintains equipment inventory and orders supplies; handles program purchasing and expenditure tracking;
  • interprets rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; assists in maintaining a recordkeeping system for files and records; and assists with coordinating disposal of confidential BLS program documents according to the BLS record retention schedules; and
  • performs other duties as assigned.


Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in business, public administration, computer science, or library science. Education and experience relevant to position may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.

Additionally, this position requires:

  • one year of full-time work experience in the collection and verification of data, statistical analysis, writing summaries or reports for findings, creating data charts, graphs, and tables for reports or publications, performing detailed research and providing quality customer service.

Preferences for this position include:

  • course work in statistical analysis, research methodology, economics, or in a field relative to assignment;
  • bilingual language skills in English/Spanish (oral and written); and
  • medical coding and/or terminology.

This position requires demonstrated knowledge of:

  • office practices and administrative procedures;
  • business or program terminology, spelling, punctuation, grammar, typing formats, and word processing techniques and procedures.
  • telephone collection and verification of data;
  • disseminating technical procedures;
  • statistical concepts and methods and their application to research analysis;
  • measurement, testing, and evaluation of data and estimates; and
  • research methods, principles, techniques, and philosophies.

This position requires demonstrated skill in:

  • conducting qualitative and quantitative research;
  • problem solving, decision making, and planning;
  • professional telephone techniques;
  • summarizing information for reports and publications;
  • writing and editing reports and publications;
  • using Microsoft Office software applications, including Word and Outlook;
  • using personal computers sufficient to enter and extract data from related systems and programs; and
  • performing Internet research and using statistical tools and programs.

This position requires the demonstrated ability to:

  • communicate professionally and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with all levels of employees and the general public;
