Texas Department of Insurance

This position performs highly advanced communication work. Work involves transforming complex information into engaging content to meet the needs of our customers. We’re looking for creative candidates who enjoy a good brainstorming session, think strategically, and love words. Really love words. Work involves helping develop communication strategies on a variety of topics and implementing those plans.


The Senior Writer:

  • creates consumer features that help explain complex insurance terms and information;
  • researches, writes, and edits white papers, letters, and other materials that are easy to understand and maintain a high standard of technical accuracy;
  • develops content for a variety of formats, including web and social media;
  • writes speeches and compiles talking points;
  • works with agency programs to assess their communication needs and develop innovative communication plans; and
  • performs related work as assigned.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in communications, journalism, English, or a related field. Education and experience relevant to the position requirements may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.


Additionally, this position requires:

  • five years of experience in a field related to the assignment.


This position requires demonstrated knowledge of:

  • plain language principles;
  • effective communication strategies; and
  • spelling, punctuation, grammar, and common style guides.

This position requires demonstrated skill in:

  • developing content for a variety of audiences and formats;
  • creating a tone and messaging standards for a brand;
  • problem solving and critical thinking; and
  • working in a fast-paced environment and meeting deadlines.

This position requires the demonstrated ability to:

  • research and organize information;
  • create content that is innovative and original;
  • collaborate with a team to develop new ideas;
  • communicate and work effectively with a wide range of people;
  • stay current with communication trends and tools; and
  • multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently.
