Current Opportunity: Engineering Specialist

The Engineering Specialist performs engineering work in the Engineering Services Program, part of the Inspections Office of the Regulatory Policy Division. The Engineering Services Program evaluates and recommends building code standards and conducts oversight of professional engineers certifying structures for windstorm insurance coverage.


This position:

  • evaluates rational analysis and test reports on building products to determine their ability to withstand wind load requirements outlined in the building code specifications;
  • prepares technical correspondence;
  • communicates with windstorm inspectors, contractors, engineers, architects, manufacturers, elected officials and their staff, insurance agents, TDI employees, and consumers concerning the Windstorm Inspections Program, building codes, engineering regulations, standards, or policies;
  • assists in the development and implementation of education programs for engineers and inspectors; and
  • assists with engineering fieldwork, such as inspecting, drafting, and design, and preparing drawings and sketches.

Qualifications

This position requires graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a degree in engineering or related field. Education and experience relevant to the position requirements may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.


Additionally, this position requires:

  • Engineering Specialist I – six months experience in a field relative to assignment.
  • Engineering Specialist II – two years’ experience in a field relative to assignment.
  • Engineering Specialist III – four years’ experience in a field relative to assignment.


This position requires demonstrated knowledge of:

  • engineering principles, techniques, and procedures;
  • mathematics, as applicable to engineering calculations and techniques;
  • the design of structures;
  • wood frame and masonry construction;
  • current construction practices and of building codes;
  • ASCE-7 and application of wind loads; and
  • International Residential Code and the International Building Code, specifically regarding wind resistant construction.

This position requires demonstrated skill in:

  • problem solving, decision making, and planning;
  • using standard office equipment;
  • using Microsoft Office software applications, including Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook to complete tasks such as editing, entering, and extracting data; and
  • computer-aided design techniques and Auto CAD engineering software.

This position requires the demonstrated ability to:

  • apply critical thinking to evaluate, analyze, and interpret information;
  • design and evaluate engineering projects;
  • perform structural computations, particularly relating to wood and masonry design;
  • communicate and work effectively with a wide range of people with varied skills, knowledge, and backgrounds;
  • present complex data, policies, analyses, and recommendations in a clear, concise, and compelling manner; and
  • interpret federal and state laws and regulations and understand with impact on engineering and property and casualty insurance.
