Current Opportunity: Forensic Scientist

Internal/External TDI Employees and the General Public

The Forensic Scientist conducts laboratory tests, analyses, classifications, comparisons, and identifications of physical evidence; interprets analytical results; and testifies as an expert witness.

This position:

  • performs specialized criminalist work involving advanced chemical analysis of fire debris evidence in criminal investigations, maintains security of evidence and prepares technical reports of scientific examination results;
  • schedules court appearances;
  • participates in proficiency testing and lab accreditation process;
  • provides technical information to investigators and courts; and
  • assists with special projects.


Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in chemistry or another natural science.   Education and experience relevant to position requirements may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.

Additionally, this position requires:

  • Twenty-four hours of chemistry which must include two semesters of the following:
    •  general chemistry with laboratory;
    •  organic chemistry with laboratory; and
    •  analytical chemistry with laboratory.  


This position requires the demonstrated knowledge of:

  • proper evidence and hazardous chemical handling procedures; and
  •  the principles and practices of analytical chemistry and instrumentation.

This position requires the demonstrated skill in:

  • use of laboratory equipment and materials; and
  • using Microsoft Office software applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

This position requires the demonstrated ability to:

  • conduct complex chemical and physical analyses;
  • prepare technical reports;
  • present scientific data in an understandable manner to lay juries;
  • develop and maintain effective public relations; and
  • communicate and work effectively with all levels of employees and the public.
