Current Opportunity: Benefit Review Officer

Internal/External Posting for TDI Employees and the General Public

The Benefit Review Officer presides over Benefit Review Conferences (BRCs) and old law pre-hearing conferences on disputes arising under the Texas Workers’ Compensation Act.


This position:

  • conducts BRCs with duties that include mediating disputes between the parties consistent with Texas Workers’ Compensation Act (Act), Division of Workers’ Compensation Rules (Rules), Appellate Court Decisions, Appeals Panel Decisions (APDs), and the policies of the Division;
  • informs all parties of their rights and responsibilities;
  • ensures that all documents and information pertinent to the resolution of disputed issues are contained in the claim file at the conference;
  • writes a BRC report that is legally, factually, and grammatically correct upon completion of a benefit review conference;
  • generates various work products on a daily basis with minimal or no clerical/administrative assistance and completes required computer data entries that memorialize any contact with parties to a claim;
  • grants or denies BRC reset and cancellation requests;
  • acts on attorney fee requests; and
  • performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in business administration or in a related field.  Education and experience may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.


Additionally, this position prefers:

  • a licensed and practicing attorney;
  • mediation experience or training;
  • three years full-time experience processing workers’ compensation claims; and
  • bilingual English and Spanish language skills (oral and written).


This position requires demonstrated knowledge of:

  • the Texas Workers’ Compensation Act and Rules;
  • medical terminology; and
  • word processing and personal computers.

This position requires demonstrated skill in:

  • planning, decision making, and problem solving;
  • using Microsoft Office software applications, including Word and Outlook;
  • using personal computers sufficient to enter and extract data from related systems and programs;
  • operating a motor vehicle in a safe courteous manner in compliance with traffic laws; and
  • the use of automated equipment.

This position requires the demonstrated ability to:

  • apply critical thinking to comprehend the Texas Workers’ Compensation Act and rules to determine compliance or solve problems;
  • conduct proceedings and write BRC reports that are legally and grammatically correct, with minimal administrative and clerical support;
  • learn the American Medical Association guides to impairment ratings;
  • effectively communicate both orally and in writing;
  • manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines; and
  • satisfy the conditions required to maintain fully-qualified driving status.
