Current Opportunity: Research Assistant

Internal/External Posting – TDI Employees and General Public

This position, with the Federal Data Collection program, performs entry-level research, and verifies work-related fatalities that occur in Texas. Evaluates incidents using pre-determined criteria to assign them to a program specific database supporting the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI). Performs data collection duties, reviews documents for required information, contacts external parties on the telephone to obtain information, and codes and writes narratives for data that is collected from multiple source documents. The Research & Statistics Technician enjoys a rewarding career by participating in the production of the CFOI data which are used by safety and health policy analysts and researchers to help prevent fatal work injuries. The Research and Statistics Technician will receive ongoing professional development and training, work regular hours with the option for flexible schedules, and hone their occupational safety and health research skills by working with different sources and agencies throughout Texas and the U.S.


The Research Assistant:

  • collects, researches, reviews, and analyzes a variety of source documents on work-related fatalities that occur in Texas to determine the circumstances surrounding the incidents;  
  • assigns appropriate criteria to determine and verify work relationship;
  • initiates cases after work relationship has been established and enters information into the CFOI database;
  • contacts data sources either by telephone or correspondence to request additional source documents and to collect, edit, and verify data as needed;
  • prepares required documents and creates hard copy case files; performs data entry of case information into the CFOI data collection system;
  • responds to inquiries about cases and performs updates and edits; routinely transmits data; maintains a hard copy system for files and records, and assists in the maintenance of electronic backups;
  •  writes detailed case narratives about work-related fatalities, and assigns detailed numeric codes to demographic and case characteristics using the information provided within each case file;
  • operates automation equipment for data entry and word processing;
  • prepares routine correspondence, from templates, for communication with external parties and program status reports as requested;
  • provides external parties with information regarding the CFOI program, including recordkeeping rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; and
  • performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Graduate from high school or equivalent. College hours in course work relevant to required experience may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis. 


Additionally, this position requires:

  • one year of full-time experience using automated data systems, providing customer service, collecting, reviewing and verifying data, and coding, and summarizing information into written narratives.

Preferences for this position include:

  • bilingual language skills in English/Spanish (oral and written); and
  • one year experience with medical coding and/or medical terminology.

This position requires demonstrated knowledge of:

  • business or program terminology, spelling, punctuation, grammar, typing formats, and word processing techniques, software, and procedures; and
  • personal computers for word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

This position requires demonstrated skill in:

  • planning, decision making and problem solving;
  • professional telephone techniques;
  • summarizing information into written narratives;
  • performing Internet research;
  • using Microsoft Office software programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access);
  • effective oral and written communication; and
  • working with confidential, time sensitive information in a professional manner.
