The Life & Health Actuary is responsible for actuarial analysis of entities with life and/or health insurance business and provides advice to staff on actuarial matters.


This position:

  • performs actuarial examinations of life/health companies, health maintenance organizations and other related entities and prepares examination reports and workpapers;
  • determines the reasonableness of life and health actuarial liabilities;
  • analyzes financial statements of insurance companies;
  • estimates life and health insurance reserves and liabilities;
  • reviews actuarial opinions and related actuarial memoranda;
  • represents the Actuarial Office in meetings with internal TDI staff and insurance company representatives;
  • communicates with insurance company representatives, agency personnel, and other regulators;
  • reviews proposed requirements; and
  • participates in special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in actuarial science, statistics, mathematics, insurance, or related field.  Education and experience relevant to the position requirements may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.  


Additionally, this position requires:

ACTUARY I

  • No actuarial work experience or passage of examinations toward credentials.

ACTUARY II

  • one year of actuarial work experience in Life/Health insurance reserves and other areas relevant to duties listed in this posting; and
  • passage of two parts of the examinations toward actuarial credentials in the Society of Actuaries.

 

RESUMES ARE REQUIRED WITH SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION

 

A qualified applicant without credentials as an Associate of the Society of Actuaries is expected to achieve such credentials via passage of relevant actuarial exams within a period of time after employment.  This period of time is six (6) years which is proportionately reduced based on the estimated percent completion toward associateship represented by the exams passed.



This position requires demonstrated knowledge of:

  • actuarial analysis, formulas, methods, and procedures;
  • reserve methods for life and health insurance: and
  • actuarial, accounting, and auditing principles.

This position requires demonstrated skill in:

  • developing, maintaining and applying actuarial methods and formulas;
  • conceptualize particular actuarial and statistical methodologies;
  • problem solving, decision making and planning;
  • managing multiple projects; and
  • the use of computer applications to perform actuarial work.

This position requires the demonstrated ability to:

  • apply actuarial principles and techniques;
  • apply critical thinking to evaluate, analyze and interpret information;
  • interpret insurance laws, regulations and actuarial guidelines;
  • communicate and work effectively with all levels of employees and the public;
  • prepare and present comprehensive actuarial examination reports; and
  • communicate complex subjects clearly and concisely.
