    Harris County Fire Marshal Mike Montgomery, the Texas Forest Service and others collaborate to reduce the risk and impact of wildfires.     Lake Jackson Fire Chief Mike Harper and Fire Marshal Randy Crim were presented with American Fire Sprinkler Association Fire Sprinklers Save Lives awards for their life saving initiatives and activities to educate their community on the benefits of fire sprinklers. The awards were presented by the AFSA-affiliated association, Texas Fire Sprinkler Contractors Association.     College Station Fire Department is the winner of the 2011 Rolf H. Jensen Memorial Public Education Grant. The department will use the grant to support its fire and life safety public education initiative for the college community, called “Rental Housing Fire Reduction Education Program.     Applications for the 2011 Rolf H. Jensen Memorial Public Education Grant and the Fire and Life Safety Educator of the Year Award have been posted on the NFPA Web site. The deadline for both is February 2011. Reminder: The Rolf Jensen Grant is for local U.S. fire departments. The Fire and Life Safety Educator of the Year Award does not have that condition.

  • October 13, 2009
    NFPA and Johns Hopkins to study how best to teach children fire safety. This project is made possible by funding from FEMA's AFG Fire Prevention and Safety Grants. To ensure the outcomes of this study will impact future health education work, a guide for developing educational materials will be developed to help others involved in fire and life safety programs. The guide will be available on NFPA’s Web site for use by any fire department or other fire safety organization. The project is slated to be completed by July 2010.     Kidde Portable Equipment, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Recalls Dual Sensor Smoke Alarms, due to possible failure to warn of a fire.

    Senate Bill 61. Relating to the offense of failing to secure a child passenger in a motor vehicle and to fines for the offense.
    This bill becomes effective on September 1, 2009.  The bill raises the age of the child required to be secured in a passenger safety seat system while being transported from five to eight and increases the height requirement exemption from 36 inches to four feet, nine inches.  It also decreases the fine for violation from not less than $100 or more than $200 to not more than $25 for the first offense and not more than $250 for a second or subsequent offense.  Additionally, the bill calls for the assessment of 15 cents as court cost on conviction, which sums are to be used to purchase child passenger safety seat systems for distribution to low-income families.  The complete bill text and all action may be accessed online.

    House Bill 90. Relating to the sale of toy-like lighters in this state; imposing a penalty.
    The bill passed favorably out of the House, went to the Senate for first reading and was referred to the Senate State Affairs Committee.  The bill was left pending in committee.  The bill text and all action may be accessed online.
