Hurricane Gustav made landfall along the central Louisiana coast on Monday, September 1, 2008. After landfall, the system weakened and bore northwest to near Texarkana before dissipating. While more than a quarter million Texans evacuated in anticipation of a strike, Texas was spared significant damages, and evacuees were able to return home by September 4, 2008. Texas also hosted evacuees from Louisiana, some of whose return was delayed, due to the much more extensive damages experienced in their home areas
