Become a HICAP Volunteer
Volunteerism is the backbone of HICAP. The success of HICAP is achieved through responsible, energetic people who want to help others. Trained staff, and sometimes volunteers, work as benefits counselors to help seniors. Benefits counselors receive expert and ongoing training from many sources including:
- The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
- Texas Legal Services Center
- Texas Department of Insurance
- Texas Department on Aging
- Texas Department of Human Services
- Social Security Administration
- Veterans Administration
To become a volunteer, you must work through your local Area Agency on Aging. Each local AAA will customize their job descriptions for volunteers and decide where they need the most assistance. Once a volunteer becomes a certified member of HICAP“s counselor network, he or she is assigned to a location (usually a senior center) that is in need of HICAP services. Volunteers are required to attend subsequent informal meetings and training workshops.
